This 2012 study, written by Barbara Escobio Ostos as part of a doctoral program at the University of California, San Diego, examined leadership styles of heads of schools using a national quantitative survey, as well as qualitative interviews with female heads. The results indicate heads demonstrate transformational leadership styles, female heads self-report higher transformational leadership styles than their male counterparts, and male heads of school ascend to headship faster than women. Further, it outlines how the individual voices of female heads collectively indicate that female heads' natural styles lend themselves to the characteristics of transformational leadership.
